The purpose of Families Matter: St. Lucie Public Schools Parenting Guide is to give parents and families information about the resources found within our local community. The resources shared could be in the form of people connected to St. Lucie Public Schools like School Counselors, District Support Personnel or Educators on your child\u2019s campus, or the resources could be found on our SLPS website, and it could be in the form of local community agencies that help your child achieve success. You play a pivotal role in the life of your child\/children, and as always, our aim is to support you. Today, our purpose is to give you tools and resources to support your <\/span>family<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

McKinney-Vento is the name of the Federal act that protects the rights of students experiencing homelessness. It was named after the two senators that created the law in 1986. McKinney-Vento defines homelessness as individua<\/span>ls lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We can help remove any barriers to the student attending and <\/span>participating<\/span> full<\/span>y<\/span> in school. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This includes; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

-Immediate enrollment in school<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

-Free breakfast\/lunch<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

-Assistance<\/span>\u00a0with field trip or <\/span>athletic fees<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

-School of origin transportation<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

-Referrals to community resources<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

-Assistance with Senior cap & gown fees if they are unable to pay the cost<\/p>\n

-McKinney-Vento seniors also qualify for the tuition waiver program through the Florida College System program<\/p>\n

-Case management services to <\/span>assist<\/span> the family with navigating any of these pieces<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

United Against Poverty<\/span><\/a>, commonly known as UP, has a Member S<\/span>hare Grocery Program that helps families save up to 70% on grocery and household product <\/span>budgets<\/span>. Qualified households can join <\/span>the Member <\/span>Share<\/span> Grocery Program for free<\/span><\/p>\n

The Treasure Coast Food Bank<\/a> has an order ahead service for families to order food and pick up via a drive thru. <\/span>The time slots fill up quickly. People are allowed to <\/span>utilize<\/span> the order<\/span> ahead program up to twice a <\/span>month,<\/span> but it is always <\/span>advised to try<\/span> and grab a time slot a couple <\/span>weeks<\/span> before. <\/span>There are a few simple steps.<\/span><\/p>\n
